Symposium Agenda

Our Atlanta symposium was a great, great success. Why not make it 2 in a row...come to our New Jersey/ New York City symposium! You will be glad you did. There will be some fantastic tours of Manhattan; some fantastic speakers and topics, much different than last year; and, then, at the end of it, a great cruise awaits those of you who can take it - all the way to Nova Scotia (see our ad on our web site). Whatever you do, whether it's the symposium...or the symposium and tours...or the symposium, tours and cruise...whatever, this will be an experience you will always remember and treasure. What a great way to celebrate 11 days and all with the greatest people in the World, ST'rs and their spouses. Want to come along? Read on...

A great feature this year is that 2 of you will each win a prize of up to $500 in value to come to the symposium. You must be a member and then you will get your airfare plus registration plus hotel paid up to a total of $500. A drawing for this will be held July 15, 2010. This is a WOW!!!!

THEN another drawing for those of you who sign up before June 1st. If you're the lucky winner, and there is always a winner, you will receive:

1st & 2nd prize 1 each free upgrade to a junior suite
3rd & 4th prize 1 each free Obusforme high back backrests
5th & 6th prize 1 each free registration fee of $89
7th prize 1 free Friday tour fee for Manhattan Island tour
8th & 9th prize I each free 15 minute massages

Tours? Yes, we have them once again and they are fantastic - 2 of them. They both will be of Manhattan Island and you can see where they go in the insert in this magazine. They are very, very informative and exciting. New York City has so much to offer; so much to see; so much to do. You will be amazed at all that's there. That's why there are 2 tours. Plan on arriving early and take one or both.

Friday night is when the action starts. Registration at 4 PM kicks it off and then, at 5:45PM is when the cash bar opens up followed at 6 PM with an Italian buffet dinner...but that's not all. The buffet will be followed by a couple of speakers - Bonnie Hawkins and Howard Thiel - Plus a big, big surprise will come in! And then our keynote speaker from New York City - Hallie Neill, an amazing young woman from New York who, as a professional opera singer, has faced many challenges from ST...well, she will tell you all about it. She is a phenomenal person.

Saturday starts with probably the best array of speakers and topics we've had:

James Auberle, MD, neurologist, Toledo Clinic. His topic will be all about doctors and what their individual private practice challenges are that they face in the future such as HIPPA, Attorneys, professional liability issues, etc. How have they affected doctors and will they deter new doctors from entering the scene?

Eric Johnson, Ph D, U of WI, Madison, WI Co-developer of Oculinum (now botox) who will explain what the differences are between all the various types of toxins and how they work in their own ways.

Patrick Hogan, MD, neurologist, Puget Sound Neurology. Taking up where Dr Johnson leaves off Dr Hogan will explain, from a clinical standpoint, how doctors will probably use these various toxins. There are now 3 available - Botox, Myobloc, Dysport - plus 2 more pure forms to be available in the future. What will a doctor prescribe? Are they interchangeable?

Carlos Arce, MD, neurosurgeon, University of Florida. Always a popular subject, the selective denervation operation will be explained. Amazing before's and after's you don't want to miss.

Erwin Montgomery, MD, neurologist, University of Alabama. DBS? What's new? Coming more and more on the scene is the epidural version of it (no heavy halo) and how does his research with "his primates" enter into the equation? More people are turning to the DBS Operation and with success.

David Charles, MD, neurologist, Vanderbilt University. Insurance? Is it gone? Will Washington, DC bring it back? What exactly is Medicare and Medicaid and how do they operate? Do they influence what all insurance companies do? Or, do all insurance companies follow the lead of Medicare? - This could well influence your medical future!

Mark Hallett, MD, neurologist. Dr Hallett is Chief of the Medical Neurology Branch...NINDS and NIH... and does research concerning the pathophysiology and treatment of movement disorders which would include the dystonias such as torticollis. He will talk about current research in dystonia.

In addition, as in previous years, Mark LeDoux, MD, neurologist, will be there to take blood samples in his non-ending research into genetics. Also on hand will be Myra Murphy Jacob and Theresa Martelli from Sandia Park, NM to once again provide massages for those people wanting them. They were very much in demand in Atlanta. Feels good........see article following this agenda for the times they will give massages plus some pretty interesting facts.

Once again, after the doctors give their presentations, you will be treated to a lengthy Q & A session with them. Bring your questions and they will answer them as time permits. If there is enough time after the Q & A there will be breakout corners for you to ask the doctors specific questions concerning yourself.

During the day a "working lunch" will be provided with sandwiches being served and, then, at night, we will have a plated dinner with a cash bar at 5:45 PM followed by the dinner at 7 PM and then "DANCING WITH THE STARS" with a great DJ.

Sunday seems to come too early and too fast but the best part of the whole symposium may just be on this day. Not only does this doctor present to us on Saturday but we're lucky to have him on Sunday - Patrick Hogan, MD, neurologist, Puget Sound Neurology. Not only does he treat many ST'rs medically but he also firmly believes that exercise, music and dancing is very beneficial to the brain. Teaming up with Dr Hogan will be Mikki Townshend, physical therapist who developed our PT DVD tape. She will go over the exercises with you and help you to do them better in case you're having problems. Also, Renee LaVerrier will be back to teach us about Yoga and how it has helped her. She has both Parkinson's and Dystonia and has written the book, "Yoga for Movement Disorders".

Where will we be staying? At the Marriott Renaissance in Elizabeth, NJ which is a free 10 minute shuttle ride from the Newark, NJ airport. The cost of the room is just $89 plus tax, a tremendous rate, especially when you consider what it would cost to stay just across the river on Manhattan Island. Call 908 436 4600 and reserve your room now. Tell them you're with ST/Dystonia. The address of the hotel is 1000 Spring St, Elizabeth, NJ 07201. Free parking will be available for those driving.

Your cost with ST/Dystonia is just $89 per person and this includes 3 meal functions, one on Friday night and 2 on Saturday. As we have mentioned, COME EARLY AND STAY LATE. Symposiums are really a 3 way experience - a vacation, an invaluable way to gain knowledge and a great way to make new friends or reacquaint yourself with friends you previously met. All in all an exciting experience you won't soon forget. See you in NJ/NYC!!!
