It is the mission of the WELLNESS CORNER to provoke comfort, empowerment, and options for our members.
By way of introduction my name is Linda Rafferty. I have had ST since 1986. I have been proactive with ST/Dystonia since 1989. My career background for 25 years has been in accounting for small business. In 1998 I became a Mississippi and Florida licensed aesthetician (skin care specialist). ANTIOXIDANTS
Anti (against)
Oxidation - The union of a substance) cells/tissues) with oxygen as in burning, rusting, corrosion.
RUST - We all have seen the effects of oxygen on untreated metals. A similar process occurs when cells in our body breakdown stored fat to use for energy for body processes such as breathing and digestion.
The oxidation is a natural, necessary process but also occurs as a response to exposure to toxic chemicals such as smoking, vehicle exhaust, indoor pollution and radiation (sun, x-rays) to name a few.
A by-product of this process is the creation of "free-radicals". "Free-radicals" are normally paired molecules/atoms that are necessary for life and only when they become unpaired, do they become harmful. Harmful Free Radicals, or unpaired atoms, cam damage cells, impair the immune system and lead to degenerative diseases and disorders. Recent scientific studies strongly link aging to free radical damage.
The important role of antioxidants is being recognized by the medical industry for the vital role they play in preventing and repairing cellular breakdown in our bodies.
Free radicals are, to a degree, kept in check by naturally Free Radical Scavengers also known as antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals. They present in fresh fruits, whole grains and vegetables.
In an ideal world, a diet rich in antioxidant fruits, vegetables, and whole grains might provide most of the protection and detoxification our bodies need. In the real world, (poor soil conditions, polluted environment and generally poor eating habits), we need to minimize free radical damage and strengthen health by including quality supplements and a high intake of antioxidant nutrients with our daily meals.
Some powerful antioxidants are:
- vitamins A,C,E and the minerals selenium and zinc
- the enzyme CQ-10 - Flaxseeds (freshly ground daily)
- Alpha-Lipoic Acid - Grapeseed Extract
- Lycopene - Green Superfoods (Spirulina, rice bran,
- Lutein soy and barley sprouts: young shoots of
- Green Tea wheat grasses and alfalfa
We only have one life, feed it well!
