Friendly Fats

Friendly Fats

Just look at all the "Fat Free" foods that line the shelves in our grocery centers. In our war on cholesterol, we've made fat of all kind the enemy. Not all fats are evil.

Our romance with fat free foods has had adverse effects on our bodies. Fat free foods have more added sugar and salt to enhance the taste, and trans fatty acids to extend shelf life. In the past 10 years, the numbers of overweight and obese persons have skyrocketed and diabetes is almost epidemic. There are several reasons for this - practically all diet related.

Certain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (EFA's), also known as omega-6 and omega-3, are essential for optimal health. Our bodies do not make these compounds (EFA's). We must consume them in the foods we eat. Our brain tissue is 60% fat. A large amount of this fat is omerga-3, also known as DHA. DHA is important for brain and nervous system functions.

Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids should be eaten in a balanced ratio of (4) omega 6 to (1) omega 3. The food choices we often make today have pushed this ratio to 20:1 We are consuming way too many omega-6 in proportion to omega-3 fatty acids setting the stage for inflammation ( arthritis), premature aging (wrinkles), heart disease, (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides), brain disease and disorders (Alzheimer's/Parkinson's, possibly even dystonia ), depression and learning disabilities.

One of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids is fresh (not farm-raised) cold water fish - mackerel, lake trout, sardines, and salmon. (Farm-raised fish consume feed heavy in omega-6's.) Additionally olive oil, avocados and walnuts are excellent choices for omega-3's . Reduce omega-6's by cutting down on fried/fatty foods including snack foods and salad dressings. Add more fruits and vegetables to your menu. For extra insurance an EFA (omega-3) supplement is a healthy convenience.

Benefits of bringing Omega-6 and omega-3 back into balance is increased energy and endurance , sharper mental alertness, digestive health, immune support, and a strong, healthy heart. Improvements can be felt in as little as three months.
